After borrowing a couple of his books from a friend, I discovered actually a great listing of grants and money available to women, minorities, entrepreneurs and other people looking for financial help. Matthew Lesko, in my opinion, has done nothing more than do the “grunt work” in compiling a large list of government, corporate, and foundation money available. Is it as easy as he or others make it sound to get the money? Probably not, but nonetheless, one of the hardest problems to solve is where to start looking. For this, Lesko gives the solution and provides value in this area.

No, I am not paid or endorsing Matthew Lesko or his materials – you’ll have to decide for yourself if you desire to go further. I’m simply saying that if you need a good starting point to find free money and grants, it might be worth the price of one of his books IF and ONLY IF you intend on following through and making application to some of the programs. What happens with most people is they buy books like this and do nothing with it.

Where can you find Matthew Lesko’s free money books? Some are available at larger bookstores or online. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him on TV, so I don’t know if he’s still doing the infomercials. One funny thing: I saw him on an interview a few years ago when he was still on TV a lot. You might think he’s as crazy as a loon. In this TV interview I saw, he was very calm, sensible, articulate, and built a good case for the information he sells. Again, you will have to decide, but if you could get even a small amount of money from one of his sources it might be worth the cost of the book. Much information is available on the internet for those willing to search; however, many people would like to have a large resource to start with first.

Mini grants are small grants (or mini scholarships) usually in amounts like $500, $1000, or slightly more. Smaller organizations can offer these amounts in lieu of tens of thousands of dollars beyond their ability to give.

How can you allow these to work for you? Consider these steps:

1. Expand your funding or scholarship searches to these lower amounts.
2. Build a list of all mini grants which match your source of funding.
3. Be sure to look at civic agencies, foundations (both corporate and private), and local community agencies.
4. Don’t fail to look at the STATE level as well as the local level of organizations.
5. Don’t cut yourself short by not spending the TIME to look for these small grants. There are thousands of them which are not always easy to find.
6. Search for lists of grants online that you can research further. For instance, we have a “Big List of Nursing Grants” someone could use to drill down further to find funding that matches their particular endeavor. You can especially find some of the smaller grants this way.
7. Ask some of the organizations you apply to if they know of similar organizations who fund your area of need. Often, these organizations network and will have information on each others resources.
8. Don’t start two weeks before you need the money! Allow yourself ample time to apply as many grants have CYCLES where you can only apply certain times of the year.

There is much money out there which requires diligence to find and apply for. Remember that for every grant you find and apply for, you chances increase of securing more money!

Please note that there seems to be a general distinction between those wanting to train to be a Doctor or Surgeon and those who simply want an education in Nursing. This may be true only to a degree, however this is my perception from searching for these grants. Some of the grants / scholarships are rather small and some are considerably larger, but hey, every little bit helps, right? So here are some lists of Nursing Grants to and some sites that provide more information:

1. Nurse Scholarships are available at the Health Resources and Services administration.  This program provides good funding in exchange for working for 2 years at certain facilities directed by the program.

2. CollegeScholarships.org has a page specifically designed to nursing.

3.  The Michigan Center for Nursing has a great page for funding here.

4. The Michigan League for Nurses currently offers scholarships in the amount of $1000.00.

5.  Johnson and Johnson offers a “Discover Nursing” scholarship for people who qualify.

6. The National Student Nurses association is another funding organization which has given millions in the nursing field.

8. The Nursing Schools Guide is a good site about varying nursing degree programs and scholarships.

9. Disadvantages Students scholarship in the Nursing field are also available.

11. The US Army ROTC provides scholarships in Nursing.

12. The American Nurses Association provides a Ethnic and Minority PreDoctoral and Postdoctoral fellowship for qualified persons.

13. The Emergency Nurses Association provides scholarship funding information on their homepage here.

14. The American Cancer Society offers $15,000 per year scholarships for Doctoral Degrees in Cancer Nursing.  They also provide an additional scholarship for Graduates in Cancer Nursing Practice.

17. Nursing scholarships are available for Hispanics at the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

20. People involved in active duty for the Army (or are a reservist) can receive money to complete a Bachelors in Science in Nursing.

One surprise I had in doing this post was the number of places someone to go to to receive funding in this growing area of healthcare.  Look for more posts in the future on nursing scholarship opportunities.

1. Waiting too late to apply. This is a big one! You must keep notice of scholarship deadlines and apply in a timely manner.
2. Incomplete paperwork. This is another problem for those searching for college money. By submitting incomplete paperwork you can easily eliminate yourself from the particular grant / scholarship you’re applying for.
3. Another error students make is not searching long enough for available school monies. They may think there are only a few places to get money like the ACT scholarship or a Pell Grant. In reality, there are thousands of places where money can be found. Don’t give up too quickly!!!
4. Students also can also believe a falsehood that there is NO MONEY to be found at all. This can cause them to not even look in the first place. Do your homework! There is money to be found in most cases for the diligent searcher.
5. Not following up on applications is another error. Don’t just submit and forget! Follow up.
6. Not applying for enough grants is the 6th error students make. The more scholarships you apply for correctly the higher your chances of securing the money.
7. Sloppy applications can also be a major hindrance. It can cause immediate rejection.
8. Bad spelling and grammar also cause negative first impressions in grant and scholarship applications.
9. Another bad mistake people can make is getting involved in a scholarship SCAM. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be careful about giving out information to organizations promising to get you a scholarship.
10. The last common mistake people make is not taking advantage of the search capabilities of the internet when trying to secure a grant / scholarship. This can save you much time. In fact there are many pre-researched lists of grants available online for those who will do the research. It’s not always easy, but usually worth the time investment.

Scholarships for Women are available are made available through colleges and professional organizations. Most colleges have a list of scholarships that are available, such as the Velma E. Stuit Scholarships for Women in Mathematics, Statistics, or Science from the University of Iowa that awards $2,000.

African American women have scholarships that are designed especially for them, such as the American Association of University Women’s Selected Professions Fellowships for African American Women in Business, Law or Medicine and come with a generous $5,000 to $12,000.

Scholarships for Women are available to women who never made it to college after graduating high school, such as the Talbot’s Women’s Scholarships. Talbot’s Women’s Scholarships awards 55 scholarships annually, with five winner receiving $10,000 each and 50 others winning $1,000 each.

AARP Foundation Women’s Scholarship Program was designed for women over 40. The AARP Foundation created the Women’s Scholarship Program in August 2007 to help women who were 40 years old or older overcome financial and employment barriers to help them participate in education and training opportunities they could not afford.

Scholarships for Women include programs for women especially in sciences, math, engineering, and technology. The Selected Professions Fellowships sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers awards between $5,000 and $20,000 to females entering a graduate or post-graduate degree program in one of these fields.

As with all scholarships, remember to submit your application before its deadline, enclose all requested information and documents, then proofread your application before submitting it. Scholarships are available to women, all they need to do is research for the one that best meet their needs.

Quite often, it becomes more difficult for the older student to take money away from a household or a family. This is where grant funding can be particularly helpful. Older students, in fact, students of any age are easily able to obtain grant funds in order to achieve higher education, as well as the time to attend classes. The key is to think outside the box, and fortunately, the internet makes that more possible.

Not only can grant funds be used to attend physical schools, but today, nearly every grant available to you to attend traditional college courses may also be used to attend distance classes. These types of classes may make it possible for the working adult to achieve a college degree from home, with only minimal attendance in a traditional classroom setting.

Most people are not aware that college grants may be used to attend online universities so long as they are an extension of an accredited university and you are attending at least what is considered to be a full time program. Checking out online universities to see what grants may be available to you there is always in your best interests.

Simply because you are not attending a traditional classroom setting, does not mean that student grants are not available to you. In fact, some grants are out there which are only available for students who are attending distance, or online universities for their further education.
