United States students cannot participate in the Chevening Scholarship program; however, that does not mean there are no grants to study abroad, specifically in the UK. If there is a particular school in the UK you have had your eye on, the Marshall Scholarship could be the answer to funding problems.

A Little History

The Marshall Scholarship was established at the end of the second World War and was a part of the Marshall act. The very first recipients of this scholarship were four women and eight men chosen from an applicant pool of 700. The idea behind this grant was to provide continued relations in line with the unique relationship the United States has with the United Kingdom.

Qualifying

Approximately 40 United States under graduates are chosen each year to receive the Marshall Scholarship. These grants to study abroad provide students with two years of full funding to any college in the country, with a third year extension provided in specific situations. Students are allowed to choose from any learning institution but many choose the London School of Economics, Cambridge or Oxford. The process:

•	Students are chosen by their college to receive an application
•	Applications are reviewed at one of the eight British embassy/consulate in the US
•	From University recommended applicants committees will narrow the field
•	Approximately 1/6th of applicants will move on to interview

Sample Qualifications

•	No age restrictions apply but you must have obtained first degree after April 2008
•	First undergraduate degree must come from a qualifying four year US college
•	Cannot have graduated from British University prior to application
•	GPA must be 3.7

Important Information

The Marshall Scholarship is traditionally a two-year program, meaning you have to attend a full two years, in specific situations a limited one year grant could be given. Of the last 40 Marshall Grants given, 8 were for one-year study. This type of grant is not extendable, so you will want to make sure this is sufficient.

This grant to study abroad is applicable to any university of your choosing, however final admittance is determined by the University and not the committee. This simply means that you are not guaranteed admittance and should be prepared with a second and perhaps even a third choice.

You must be able to obtain a degree within the two-year funding time frame. However, you can apply to doctorate programs and it is possible to receive an extension for a third year of study, this is not guaranteed and you will need to be able to complete a two-year degree if your funding is not extended.

If you have ever considered going to college in another country you may have wondered if there were any money to study abroad. The good news is if you are a resident of a participating country, you may qualify for a Chevening Scholarship.

Chevening Scholarship

This is a highly competitive scholarship named for Chevening house in Kent, which is the country home of the United Kingdom’s foreign secretary. This 115-room mansion sitting on 3,500 acres is currently shared residence for both the Foreign Secretary and the Deputy Prime Minister. The Chevening Scholarship is a scheme developed to provide education for individuals who will take their experience and leadership back to their home countries, thereby developing a network of “friends” for the UK.

Number of Scholarships

The number of scholarships will vary by country of residence. For example, 10 scholarships were provided for residents of Australia and Canada, while 30 were provided for China and India. Altogether, there are around 1,000 Chevening Scholarships provided for 130 countries annually. Currently this money to study abroad is not available to students from the United States.

Qualifying

If you find that you live in a country, which qualifies for the Chevening Scholarships, you will learn quickly just how competitive this program can be. The limited number per country is one reason this money to study abroad is so difficult to get. Some of the qualifying criteria includes but is not limited to:

•	Be a current resident of a qualifying country
•	Not currently enrolled in or working overseas
•	Not received any other scholarships for the academic year
•	Academic IELTS test score at least 6.5
•	Be mid-career- at least three years’ experience
•	Have ambition
•	Show leadership potential
•	Be innovative and creative

You must have at least one qualification degree and complete a personal statement about why you would like to study in the United Kingdom and how it will benefit both professionally and personally. Once your application is accepted you may be called for an interview, at which time you will have to provide qualifying documentation and references.

Conclusion

Money to study abroad may be limited but if you can meet the qualifications, the Chevening Scholarships are a great way to advance your education and career. Priority is given to those participating in specific fields, including foreign and defense policy, public service, trade and investment, energy and climate change as well as several others.

Fulbright Scholarship Overview:

Years ago the Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright established what came to be eventually known as “The Fulbright Scholarship” program. He sponsored the legislation way back in 1946 and it has since helped multiplied thousands of students fund scholarships for higher education. The program is sponsored by the Dept. of State’s “Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.”

To be named a “Fulbright Scholar” carries a certain amount of distinction with it in large part due to the program’s great success over the years. This success reaches even into the international educational community as many Fulbright scholars travel abroad utilizing the influence the money provides from the scholarship.

For those interested in applying to the program, understand that the program is administered in connection with the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). Their website can be found at www.cies.org. Of course, there are several other entities involved in the overall program. Perhaps the best place to go to find out more information is the Fulbright Program Website (www.fulbright.state.gov) at the Depart of State website devoted to the scholarship.

Fulbright Grants Overview:

It is important to understand that the Fulbright program offer both grants and scholarships. Not just students are eligible for the grants. Teachers, Scholars, Professionals, and groups can also apply and qualify for Fulbright Program Grant monies. The website on the department of state also includes a fact sheet which may be helpful to decide if you are entitled to apply for the Fulbright scholarship or grants. Be sure to go to both websites for the best understanding of these student opportunities.

Fulbright Grant Categories:

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

This program enables up to 1,100 professionals and scholars abroad to 125 countries where they can lecture or conduct research in a wide array of areas.

Fulbright Specialist Program.

Sends U.S. faculty to serve as consulting professionals in curriculum, faculty development, planning and other areas for overseas assignments for up to 6 weeks.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.

Provides over 800 visiting scholars the ability to lecture or conduct research at US institutions for up to a full academic year. Over 95 countries participate in this program from the benefits it offers.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program.

This program help higher education institutions to host lectures from foreign academics on a wide range of subjects to enrich education. Includes approximately 50 grants per year.

The Fulbright Scholarship and the Fulbright Grant Programs have had a truly influential impact in many areas of the world for over 60 years. If you think you may qualify, it is worth the effort to explore the possibility of accessing the organizations resources to further your professional objectives.

Most people, young and old alike, like to improve themselves. Getting a higher education is a great way to achieve that goal. . There are many scholarships and grants available for those who desire a higher education, as achieving this type of education often times can be costly. Textbooks, notebooks, calculators and even software programs for a laptop are often required in your studies and these can be expensive. A Wal-Mart Scholarship is one way to help with achieving your educational goals, whether it is an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or even a master’s degree. You could even pay for some of your school supplies with this scholarship.

A Wal-Mart Scholarship can be for Wal-Mart employees and their families as well as for Wal-Mart customers. That means anyone who meets the requirements can apply for this scholarship. Just follow these steps if you apply for a Wal-Mart Scholarship.

1. Complete a FAFSA. This is proof of your income and assets.
2. Read the application carefully. You need to meet all of the criteria for the scholarship.
3. Keep in mind that you need to market your talents, skills, and your achievements. Do not lie! Present your accomplishments in a positive way. If necessary, get someone to help you with this.
4. Obtain all necessary documents that need to be submitted with the application. One of these documents is your high school transcript. If one of these documents is left out, your application can be rejected.
5. Proofread your application. If necessary, get a teacher, high school counselor, or a trusted adult to proofread your application for you. You do not want to submit an application that has errors on it.
6. Pay attention to deadline dates on the application. Each program has different eligibility dates that may also vary slightly each year. If submitted late, it is an absolute surety that it will be rejected.
7. If you win the scholarship, as a courtesy gesture, sent the panel a thank you letter.

Wal-Mart has three different types of scholarships that you can apply for. The Walton Family Foundation Scholarship which is a $13,000 scholarship paid out over four years, The Sam Walton Community Scholarship which is a $3,000 scholarship, and The Wal-Mart Dependent Scholarship which is a $3,000 scholarship that is available for Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club employees or their dependents.

A Wal-Mart Scholarship is a great way to achieve your educational goals; it is also a great place to buy your school supplies at great prices.

There is nothing cheap about getting a quality education, but there is nothing fun about starting your career deeply indebted either. This is but one of many reasons that people seek out education grants and scholarships rather than taking out large student loans to pay for their degrees. If this all sounds familiar to you, then take heart, because in some situations there may be grants to pay back student loans available to you once you are gainfully employed.

John R. Justice Grant

The John R. Justice program provides grants to pay back student loans under very specific situations. First of all these must be federal student loans and this program is only open to public defenders and prosecuting attorneys. This may seem like a small section of the population, but when you consider the cost of law school today, grants to pay back student loans of this type are definitely in demand.

Eligibility

There are many different eligibility criteria; however, for the sake of time and your patience we will only list the main points. You will have an employment burden to meet as well as display a financial need. According to the website, priority will be given to those who show the most financial need! Other eligibility requirements for the John R. Justice program include but are not limited to:

•	Continually licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan
•	Not a prosecutor employed by federal government
•	Not an attorney who is in private practice
•	Not in default on student loans
•	Meet other eligibility criteria

Final Thoughts

This is just one of many such grants to pay back student loans and even though this one is strictly limited to a specific graduate student, you may be able to find similar loans for your present situation. Teachers, nurses and other students are particularly likely to be able to find special funding to repay their loans.
