One of the most colorful characters on late-night television in recent years is Matthew Lesko. He’s probably best know for his colorful outfits and promises to help you find “free money” in the form of grants and scholarships. Some people have labeled him a scam probably because of his weird outfits and crazy presentation manner in his infomercials.

After borrowing a couple of his books from a friend, I discovered actually a great listing of grants and money available to women, minorities, entrepreneurs and other people looking for financial help. Matthew Lesko, in my opinion, has done nothing more than do the “grunt work” in compiling a large list of government, corporate, and foundation money available. Is it as easy as he or others make it sound to get the money? Probably not, but nonetheless, one of the hardest problems to solve is where to start looking. For this, Lesko gives the solution and provides value in this area.

No, I am not paid or endorsing Matthew Lesko or his materials – you’ll have to decide for yourself if you desire to go further. I’m simply saying that if you need a good starting point to find free money and grants, it might be worth the price of one of his books IF and ONLY IF you intend on following through and making application to some of the programs. What happens with most people is they buy books like this and do nothing with it.

Where can you find Matthew Lesko’s free money books? Some are available at larger bookstores or online. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him on TV, so I don’t know if he’s still doing the infomercials. One funny thing: I saw him on an interview a few years ago when he was still on TV a lot. You might think he’s as crazy as a loon. In this TV interview I saw, he was very calm, sensible, articulate, and built a good case for the information he sells. Again, you will have to decide, but if you could get even a small amount of money from one of his sources it might be worth the cost of the book. Much information is available on the internet for those willing to search; however, many people would like to have a large resource to start with first.

I love to find “Lists” of things on the internet, especially when seeking out Grants and Scholarships. One of the areas most searched for on IndividualGrantsOnline.com is in the area of Nursing and Medical Grants. Over the past few months I have run across some excellent sites which lists grants or scholarships available to train in the Nursing field.

Please note that there seems to be a general distinction between those wanting to train to be a Doctor or Surgeon and those who simply want an education in Nursing. This may be true only to a degree, however this is my perception from searching for these grants. Some of the grants / scholarships are rather small and some are considerably larger, but hey, every little bit helps, right? So here are some lists of Nursing Grants to and some sites that provide more information:

1. Nurse Scholarships are available at the Health Resources and Services administration. This program provides good funding in exchange for working for 2 years at certain facilities directed by the program.

6. The National Student Nurses association is another funding organization which has given millions in the nursing field.

7. Mercy Health Partners – click here for scholarship information.

8. The Nursing Schools Guide is a good site about varying nursing degree programs and scholarships.

9. Disadvantages Students scholarship in the Nursing field are also available.

10. Information about the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corp is available here. There are 3 different programs for students to receive training while serving their country.

15.
20. People involved in active duty for the Army (or are a reservist) can receive money to complete a Bachelors in Science in Nursing.

One surprise I had in doing this post was the number of places someone to go to to receive funding in this growing area of healthcare. Look for more posts in the future on nursing scholarship opportunities.

Fulbright Scholarship Overview:

Years ago the Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright established what came to be eventually known as “The Fulbright Scholarship” program. He sponsored the legislation way back in 1946 and it has since helped multiplied thousands of students fund scholarships for higher education. The program is sponsored by the Dept. of State’s “Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.”

To be named a “Fulbright Scholar” carries a certain amount of distinction with it in large part due to the program’s great success over the years. This success reaches even into the international educational community as many Fulbright scholars travel abroad utilizing the influence the money provides from the scholarship.

For those interested in applying to the program, understand that the program is administered in connection with the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). Their website can be found at www.cies.org. Of course, there are several other entities involved in the overall program. Perhaps the best place to go to find out more information is the Fulbright Program Website (www.fulbright.state.gov) at the Depart of State website devoted to the scholarship.

Fulbright Grants Overview:

It is important to understand that the Fulbright program offer both grants and scholarships. Not just students are eligible for the grants. Teachers, Scholars, Professionals, and groups can also apply and qualify for Fulbright Program Grant monies. The website on the department of state also includes a fact sheet which may be helpful to decide if you are entitled to apply for the Fulbright scholarship or grants. Be sure to go to both websites for the best understanding of these student opportunities.

Fulbright Grant Categories:

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

This program enables up to 1,100 professionals and scholars abroad to 125 countries where they can lecture or conduct research in a wide array of areas.

Fulbright Specialist Program.

Sends U.S. faculty to serve as consulting professionals in curriculum, faculty development, planning and other areas for overseas assignments for up to 6 weeks.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.

Provides over 800 visiting scholars the ability to lecture or conduct research at US institutions for up to a full academic year. Over 95 countries participate in this program from the benefits it offers.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program.

This program help higher education institutions to host lectures from foreign academics on a wide range of subjects to enrich education. Includes approximately 50 grants per year.

The Fulbright Scholarship and the Fulbright Grant Programs have had a truly influential impact in many areas of the world for over 60 years. If you think you may qualify, it is worth the effort to explore the possibility of accessing the organizations resources to further your professional objectives.

Every college student loves to get scholarship money, and many apply for tens of thousands of scholarships each year. The truth is that much scholarship money is forfeited because of these 10 common mistakes when applying for scholarships and grants. Here is a list to watch out for:

1. Waiting too late to apply. This is a big one! You must keep notice of scholarship deadlines and apply in a timely manner.
2. Incomplete paperwork. This is another problem for those searching for college money. By submitting incomplete paperwork you can easily eliminate yourself from the particular grant / scholarship you’re applying for.
3. Another error students make is not searching long enough for available school monies. They may think there are only a few places to get money like the ACT scholarship or a Pell Grant. In reality, there are thousands of places where money can be found. Don’t give up too quickly!!!
4. Students also can also believe a falsehood that there is NO MONEY to be found at all. This can cause them to not even look in the first place. Do your homework! There is money to be found in most cases for the diligent searcher.
5. Not following up on applications is another error. Don’t just submit and forget! Follow up.
6. Not applying for enough grants is the 6th error students make. The more scholarships you apply for correctly the higher your chances of securing the money.
7. Sloppy applications can also be a major hindrance. It can cause immediate rejection.
8. Bad spelling and grammar also cause negative first impressions in grant and scholarship applications.
9. Another bad mistake people can make is getting involved in a scholarship SCAM. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be careful about giving out information to organizations promising to get you a scholarship.
10. The last common mistake people make is not taking advantage of the search capabilities of the internet when trying to secure a grant / scholarship. This can save you much time. In fact there are many pre-researched lists of grants available online for those who will do the research. It’s not always easy, but usually worth the time investment.

Many young adults are not aware that the Elk Scholarship is available for college funding. The “Elks” organization runs the Elks lodges which are a part of many communities across the nation. They run more than 2000 lodges across the country and have some 900,000 members.

Through the charitable services of the Elks Foundation, they provide over 3 million dollars each year to support communities through three scholarship programs.

“Most Valuable Student Scholarships”
The scholarship applications for 2012 begin in September 1, 2011. The Elks Foundation will award 500 four year scholarships to lucky candidates. Applications can be found at your local Elks Lodge or online. Scholarships range from $1000.00 to $15,000.00.

“Legacy Awards Scholarships”
Legacy Awards are also great to help struggling students. Awards are for $4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year for four years) with total of up to 250 awards offered.

“Emergency Educational Grant Program”
These grants benefit children of deceased or totally disabled Elks members and can range up to $4000. The exact amount is based upon information submitted in the application. Be aware that students must qualify and and membership of the Elks family member must be verified as well.

The Elks Foundation also supports many other programs on the state level. More information on their community involvement may be found on their website at The National Elks Foundation.

For searching for an Elks Scholarship and application read more of the details here. They also have a special helps section for students to find other scholarship resources.

Their website also contains more information about Grants given on the state and local level. They certainly do a great work from the Foundation including both the scholarship aspect and giving to the state and local communities. For college students looking to provide for their educational expenses, the Elks Scholarship should certainly be looked into especially if the student has a family member who is a member of this organization. Every little bit of money can help with those college expenses!

We have received a lot of interest here on Individual Grants Online about Scholarships for India and for Grant money requests for India Minority students. In reality, we have had very little information about this subject and there is little information on the net about the subject. To better help those who have wrote to us on the subject, we’ll try to give a little more information and at least point people in the right direction.

The good news is that there is money available for India students who are seeking grants and scholarships to further their education. You need to understand that here in the United States there are scholarships available under certain conditions, but that is not my focus here. Most of the requests for information have concerned scholarships for those who still reside in their country of India.

One main post that got a lot of traffic concerned “APSMFC” scholarships and specifically the pre-matric and post-matric scholarships offered. To be honest, I don’t know all the details about the scholarship but here are some links which will be most helpful to you in applying for these grant monies as well as 3 links to some Microsoft grants and fellowships available to students who are excelling in technology in their studies in India:

1. Main APSMFC website: This is the Andhra Pradesh State Minorities Finance Corporation and associated articles and history of helping Indian students gain access to money for further education.

2. Pre-Matric Scholarship for India Minority Students and the qualifications: http://www.apsmfc.com/scholarship-pre-matric.html

You would have to live under a rock to not know who Bill Gates is as the creator of Microsoft products he is touted as the second richest man in the world. Gates, who has been the richest man for several years running, has used a large portion of his wealth for philanthropic causes, including setting up the Bill Gates scholarship, otherwise known as the Millennium scholarship.

Details

The Millennium Scholarship was set up in 1999 with a $1 billion donation from Bill and Melinda Gates. Each year 1,000 new students will get an opportunity to further their education. The overall goal of the scholarship is to provide minority students who have shown high academic excellence but also demonstrate a significant financial need.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Bill Gates scholarship you have to be a part of one of several specific ethnic backgrounds. Specifically Native American, Alaska Native, African American, Hispanic American or Asian Pacific Islander American. This scholarship was originally funded by a one billion dollar grant and is administered by the United Negro College Fund and various other minority organizations.

Applications

The Bill Gates scholarship or Gates Millennium Scholarship is not like other traditional scholarships in other ways as well. First, you must be nominated by an educator and recommended by an adult who is familiar with the student’s community service and leadership activities.

You see eligibility is determined by many different factors including GPA, ethnic origin, financial need, civic duty and many other criteria. You are also encouraged to fill out federal Pell grant applications as these can be used in conjunction with the Gates Scholarship.

Provides

This scholarship provides:
•	Funding to further your education
•	Graduate school funding in several areas including: computer science, engineering, mathematics, public health and more
•	Leadership development programs
•	Renewable awards based on continuing academic progress.

Conclusion

For many people the Bill Gates scholarship is an opportunity to pursue their higher education dreams. Though the process may seem complicated and the competition is fierce for funds, the end result could be a quality four-year education at the college of your choice. Every year 1000 talented individuals will receive funds that are good through graduation as long as adequate academic progress is maintained. What is more these funds are usable at nearly any college of your choosing. Talk to your high school guidance counselor for more information on applying for this grant.

You might not immediately consider being of Native American decent as a minority group, however recent census record they make up only .8% of the total United States population. This means they may be eligible for various minority grants for college, business and other endeavors. There are also now Native American and Tribal college grants as well.

Today, many more Native American students are interested in higher education than ever before and actually taking the time to go back to school. Most of the reason for this can be traced back the to the many new tribal and Native American college grants.

Typically, many Native Americans are well below the poverty level, however living outside of federal laws, most do not qualify for any type of federally funded grants. You see living on the reservation affects eligibility for many federal programs. This makes it more difficult for the Native American student to achieve the tuition that college requires. As a result, most Native Americans, until very recently, believed that the high school diploma was as far as they would be able to go.

Fortunately that is changing. Tribal grants, offered by many native American tribes and funded by tribal resources are becoming more and more common. Financial means to pay for schooling is given not only by the tribes themselves, but by many private groups and even non -profit organizations.

To be eligible for Native American grants and scholarships, it is necessary, in many cases to be of a certain blood quantum, but that may not always be the case. You must provide for your ethnicity in some way, typically by your placement on a tribal roster, or a CIB (certificate of Indian blood.)

Your financial aid office at the college of your choice will have more information about whether you fit local or regional criteria for Native American grants in your area. They will also help you to fill out the paperwork which is required to attain those grant funds.

In some cases, simply having the name of an ancestor on the Dawes roll in the United States may be enough to qualify you for a placement in tribal rosters. Simply because you are not currently on a tribal roster does not mean that you are not eligible to be, and to be included for consideration on a Native American grant.
