One of the most colorful characters on late-night television in recent years is Matthew Lesko. He’s probably best know for his colorful outfits and promises to help you find “free money” in the form of grants and scholarships. Some people have labeled him a scam probably because of his weird outfits and crazy presentation manner in his infomercials.

After borrowing a couple of his books from a friend, I discovered actually a great listing of grants and money available to women, minorities, entrepreneurs and other people looking for financial help. Matthew Lesko, in my opinion, has done nothing more than do the “grunt work” in compiling a large list of government, corporate, and foundation money available. Is it as easy as he or others make it sound to get the money? Probably not, but nonetheless, one of the hardest problems to solve is where to start looking. For this, Lesko gives the solution and provides value in this area.

No, I am not paid or endorsing Matthew Lesko or his materials – you’ll have to decide for yourself if you desire to go further. I’m simply saying that if you need a good starting point to find free money and grants, it might be worth the price of one of his books IF and ONLY IF you intend on following through and making application to some of the programs. What happens with most people is they buy books like this and do nothing with it.

Where can you find Matthew Lesko’s free money books? Some are available at larger bookstores or online. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him on TV, so I don’t know if he’s still doing the infomercials. One funny thing: I saw him on an interview a few years ago when he was still on TV a lot. You might think he’s as crazy as a loon. In this TV interview I saw, he was very calm, sensible, articulate, and built a good case for the information he sells. Again, you will have to decide, but if you could get even a small amount of money from one of his sources it might be worth the cost of the book. Much information is available on the internet for those willing to search; however, many people would like to have a large resource to start with first.

Every college student loves to get scholarship money, and many apply for tens of thousands of scholarships each year. The truth is that much scholarship money is forfeited because of these 10 common mistakes when applying for scholarships and grants. Here is a list to watch out for:

1. Waiting too late to apply. This is a big one! You must keep notice of scholarship deadlines and apply in a timely manner.
2. Incomplete paperwork. This is another problem for those searching for college money. By submitting incomplete paperwork you can easily eliminate yourself from the particular grant / scholarship you’re applying for.
3. Another error students make is not searching long enough for available school monies. They may think there are only a few places to get money like the ACT scholarship or a Pell Grant. In reality, there are thousands of places where money can be found. Don’t give up too quickly!!!
4. Students also can also believe a falsehood that there is NO MONEY to be found at all. This can cause them to not even look in the first place. Do your homework! There is money to be found in most cases for the diligent searcher.
5. Not following up on applications is another error. Don’t just submit and forget! Follow up.
6. Not applying for enough grants is the 6th error students make. The more scholarships you apply for correctly the higher your chances of securing the money.
7. Sloppy applications can also be a major hindrance. It can cause immediate rejection.
8. Bad spelling and grammar also cause negative first impressions in grant and scholarship applications.
9. Another bad mistake people can make is getting involved in a scholarship SCAM. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be careful about giving out information to organizations promising to get you a scholarship.
10. The last common mistake people make is not taking advantage of the search capabilities of the internet when trying to secure a grant / scholarship. This can save you much time. In fact there are many pre-researched lists of grants available online for those who will do the research. It’s not always easy, but usually worth the time investment.

Multiple School Grants and Scholarships
Most everyone is eligible for school grants and scholarships, sometimes more than one in fact. Eligibility requirements depend upon an individual’s financial need as well as to which school is being applied for.

Multiple school grants and scholarships are available. One of the main grants that students should apply for is the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). This form can be filled out online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Also, the FAFSA form can be picked up in paper form at various locations such as universities, libraries, legal offices, and other places.
The FAFSA is simply a way that the federal government finds out and processes your financial status to determine your eligibility for grants. The FAFSA never has to be repaid. There are other federal grants available such as PELL grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) grants. Grants are also available from local states. Always keep in mind that school grants and scholarships do not have to be repaid.

Multiple school grants and scholarships are available through local states and universities. You can apply for more than one scholarship or grant. If you are asked to pay a fee, do not fill out any forms. There should never be a fee to fill out a scholarship or grant form. There are many of these available for those needing financial aid. Always check with the United States Department of Education, check with your local state of residence, and check with the college or university that you are planning to attend.

If you are the recipient of a scholarship or grant, read the requirements; some state that there are no cash refunds allowed or other stipulations. All recipients should be aware of what each scholarship or grant covers or will pay for or not pay for. There are some really good websites available to help you in your search for school grants and scholarships.

Today, very few college students are simply able to achieve payment of their tuition without some type of financial assistance. As the economy has worsened, so too has the ability of parents to pay for the college tuition that their children need.

One way to make up the difference and to assist worthy students to attend college is the use of grant monies, which are vastly different than student loans.

Unlike a student loan, a grant does not have to be paid back to the lending institution, which is typically the government. The grant money may be provided to the student from a local, state, or federal governing body, or may come from specific businesses or organizations.

They are not typically merit-based, but instead are based upon demonstration of financial need, and will be given based upon criteria which has been set by the financial overseer.

Grant monies may be paid based upon the subject that you will be studying and the major that you will pursue, or upon your participation in a certain level of degree. They may also be based upon your membership in a certain ethnic group. Many grants are given to Hispanic or to Black students only, while businesses may offer a grant to students who will be pursuing a course of study in English or in Mathematics or Chemistry.

In most cases, the funding that you receive will come from agencies or governments, but some grants are available from families or smaller businesses as well. These kinds of grants are typically a little more difficult to attain, and may have strict criteria for application, such as requiring that you attend a certain college or school in order to be eligible for the grant funds.

The Pell grant is a governmental grant which is slated for those who can demonstrate a financial need, and would still like to attend college. It’s relatively easy to apply for a Pell grant, with simple financial forms you can actually fill out online to see if you qualify. In order to receive the Pell Grant, you must make several commitments, however, and keep up your end of the bargain.

These commitments are very strictly enforced. If you fail to keep them, you can quite easily lose your grants and funding, however if you do achieve your goals and do as you have promised to the Pell Grant commission, you may, depending on the cost of your schooling, graduate virtually debt free from trade school or community college.

The Pell Grant is awarded based upon your financial need, but you must keep a specific grade point average in order to keep your grant from semester to semester. In addition, you must remain drug free during the entire duration of your college. With a combination of the Pell Grant, federally funded, as well as work study programs, your college may be very close to free of charge for you.

The Pell Grant does not merely pay for college, but may be used to pay for books, for tuition, for housing or incidentals, as well as other college related costs. The student may use the Pell Grant even to assist in child care or directly related school expenses so long as they are eligible for the award. Transportation to and from school fall within the guidelines as an approved expense as well.

If you study hard and keep your grade point average up, the federally funded Pell grant can take care of a significant portion of your college tuition or trade school costs and you will have significantly lower debt once you graduate.
